Kayakers encounter shark

On 1st February two island visitors kayaking about a mile off the Kihei coast reported an encounter with a large white shark. The kayakers said that the shark was wider than their red kayak and two to three times its length and that it followed them for 15 minutes, bumping the boat as they made their way back from Molokini to Makena. No one was injured.

Kayaking course in Sausalito, San Francisco

Sea Trek run a crash course on kayaking every Saturday and Sunday (8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. $110. Includes equipment.) in Sausalito.

Start with on-land demonstrations and then start paddling in real water. If you fail to learn a thing, you can still make a good impression at Sea Trek’s Valentine’s Day special: a (nearly) full-moon sea kayak paddle on the bay, 6-9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
